Frederick Douglass-My Bondage and My Freedom

Frederick Douglass is a pioneer for civil rights. He believed “knowledge is the pathway from slavery to freedom,” and this belief compelled Douglass to learn to read and write. Considering this thought, if ever we choose to reject opportunities to contemplate and learn new ideas and gain new knowledge, then do we fall victim to a sort of self inflicted enslavement? Doesn't Douglass point to the overwhelming importance of learning?

Furthermore, although not all learning and education takes place within the walls of the school house, it is a place centered on learning. My charge to you is to not waste opportunities you have to learn, especially at school. You are afforded a free education, unlike Douglass, who had to secretly educate himself amidst fear of punishment. Challenge yourself everyday to gain new knowledge or reinforce or rethink knowledge you already possess.

Comment on my thoughts. In your comments, reveal why you think education and gaining knowledge is important to you.

  1. I think that getting a basic education is important because it allows you to complete basic tasks you wouldn't be able to do other wise. For example, spelling, reading, writing, even counting. Basic "edu-macation" allows us to communicate and develop our own voice and opinion

  2. Getting an education is important because without basic knowledge you wouldn't be able to do much. For example, If we didn't know how the basics like our ABC's or numbers, life would be hard in areas like trying to communicate with people or getting a job. If you don't know the basics of life, you aren't going to get very far.

  4. i do believe if someone refuses to learn they are making it harder for themselves and maybe in the future when they do want to learn they actually have to pay for something they could have gotten for free. For me education is important because its useful if you want to get anywhere in life.

  5. Knowledge is important to me because although school is handed to us on a silver platter, learning about the past helps us learn about ourselves and helps us not repeat history. And not only the actual knowledge and education, but the walls that give us the majority of it keep us safe and occupied. If there wasn't any school, crime rate would peak because people would be ignorant, and bored most of their lives. It also teaches disapline.

  7. Education is very important. It helps us gain knowledge, information and interpret things correctly. Education teaches us how to lead our lives by mingling in the society and turning out to be good citizens. It makes us capable of interpreting rightly the things perceived. Education teaches us right behavior and makes us civilized people.
